Sony released the PlayStation 5 in November 2020 with a very limited inventory due to component shortages. The PS5 stock remained limited for several years until the end of 2022. Because of this, most users were only able to purchase the console a few weeks ago. The release of a new console in the near future may not be too good for Sony, since many PS5 owners are newcomers.

Nevertheless, Sony has plans for the PS6 console, and we learned the date when the company plans to release the next generation game console. Recently Sony officially released some documents, from which it follows that PS5 will not last long. In fact, the PS5’s lifespan may be the shortest of any PS console since the PS1.

PS5 MAY HAVE A SHORTER LIFESPAN BECAUSE OF PS6

If you think back to the days of the original PlayStation and the release of the PS3, you can understand that each PS console has a lifespan of 11 to 13 years. The most recent PS4 and PS5 consoles are still available for sale from 2013 and 2020, respectively.

Sony recently released a number of documents that were supposed to be confidential. You might wonder why Sony needed to make these documents public. All thanks to the UK Competitive Market Authority (CMA), which is investigating Microsoft’s attempt to acquire Activison Blizzard. Such documents are confidential, but because of the ongoing investigation Sony is forced to make them public.

SONY WILL LAUNCH THE PS6 IN 2027

As much as there have been rumors about the PlayStation 6, it looks like we may not see it anytime soon. Sony has stated that Microsoft will continue to make Activison games available for the PlayStation platform until 2027. It could also confirm that Sony will release a new edition in 2027.

A section of the Sony documents says, “By the time SIE launches the next generation of its PlayStation console (which will likely happen around [blacked out]). it will lose access to Call of Duty and other Activision games, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and a subsequent decline in competitiveness.”

In the documents, the official release date of the PS6 is hidden, but by making some conclusions from the information, it is easy to know that the PS6 will be released only after 2027.

It also shows that the PS5 will reign for about seven years. It’s worth noting that Sony released the PS5 seven years after the PS4. So launching the PS6 sometime in 2026 will keep the seven year time frame intact.
